Ambewela Farm (Ambewela New Zealand Farm)
About This Place
Ambewela Farm (Ambewela New Zealand Farm)
Sri Lanka's highest cattle farm, located at 1,900 metres elevation near Nuwara Eliya, managed in the style of a New Zealand farm. Surrounded by rolling green pastures, ponds with swans and ducks, a small petting zoo, and the dramatic backdrop of Pidurutalagala (Sri Lanka's highest peak). The farm produces fresh milk and dairy products sold across the country. The cool climate, misty mornings, and pastoral scenery make it feel more like Scotland than tropical Sri Lanka.

π Legends & Stories
The farm was established during the British colonial period as part of a model agriculture programme for the central highlands. Local stories say the British planted the first European grasses here as an experiment to see if temperate farming could work in tropical Sri Lanka β it succeeded beyond expectations. The mist-shrouded Pidurutalagala behind the farm is considered sacred and access to its summit is restricted.
