Dambakola Patuna Viharaya (Samudrasanna Viharaya / Port of Jambukola)

Buddhist temple built to commemorate the arrival of the Bo‑sapling brought by Arahant Sangamitta in the 3rd century BC. Originally at an ancient port (Jambukola / Samudra Pattana) in northern Jaffna. The temple was rebuilt in the 11th century by King Vijayabahu I. The original Bo‑tree and ancient structures are gone; present structures include a new stupa, young Bo‑tree, and temple buildings.

According to chronicles (Mahavamsa), the Bo sapling arrived by sea; the port received pilgrims from far off (β€œYonaka” country). The temple was one of the first places to receive one of the first eight shoots of the Sri Maha Bodhi tree.
