Dambulla Cave Temple (Golden Temple)
The largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. The rock towers 160 metres above the surrounding plains. Five magnificent caves contain 157 statues of the Buddha, 3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 of gods and goddesses, with over 2,100 square metres of paintings covering the walls and ceilings dating back to the 1st century BC.

Steps lead up the rock face; approximately 350 stone steps to reach the cave entrance; some steep sections. Shoes must be removed at the entrance.
π Legends & Stories
King Valagamba (Vattagamani Abhaya) sought refuge in these caves after being driven from Anuradhapura by South Indian invaders. After reclaiming his throne in 89 BC, he built the first temple here in gratitude. The caves are associated with miracle stories and have been a sacred site for over 2,000 years.
