King Valagamba (Vattagamani Abhaya) sought refuge in these caves after being driven from Anuradhapura by South Indian invaders. After reclaiming his throne in 89 BC, he built the first temple here in gratitude. The caves are associated with miracle stories and have been a sacred site for over 2,000 years.
