Delft Dutch Fort (Meekaman Fort / Neduntheevu Fort)
About This Place
Delft Dutch Fort (Meekaman Fort / Neduntheevu Fort)
A ruined fort originally built by the Portuguese, later taken over and modified by the Dutch. Constructed from limestone, coral, and brick. It was a complex twoβstoried structure with long narrow corridors, multiple square rooms, a dungeon below ground level with a small window for communication, trapdoors, and other defensive features. The only structure still in good shape is the Dutch dovecot (pigeon house). The walls are thick (~2 m), the dimensions of the surviving fort are about 30 m Γ 26.5 m. The fort is designated as an archaeological monument. (Lanka Pradeepa)

Accessibility & Visitor Info
Accessible on Delft Island (Neduntheevu). You reach Delft via ferry from Jaffna, then local roads. The fort is near the Delft hospital / near the jetty area. Ruins are exposed, paths may be uneven. No or little infrastructure (visitor centre etc). (Lanka Pradeepa)
π Legends & Stories
Local folklore attributes the fort also to a king Meekaman (Karaiyar caste) or βMeegaman,β a local leader. The name and attribution are mixed between colonial (Portuguese/Dutch) history and local tradition. The stories of prisoners in the dungeon, of trapdoors, and cruel confinement (being lowered in, no door, small window) form part of its legend. (Amazing Lanka)
