Gal Vihara
About This Place
Gal Vihara
One of the greatest masterpieces of ancient Sri Lankan rock sculpture, located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Four magnificent statues are carved from a single granite rock face: a 15-metre-long reclining Buddha (one of the finest in the world), a 7-metre-high seated meditating Buddha, a 7-metre standing Buddha displaying a rare hand gesture (possibly a grieving Ananda), and a smaller seated Buddha within a shrine chamber. Created during the reign of King Parakramabahu I (12th century AD).

π Legends & Stories
According to a stone inscription at the site, King Parakramabahu I called the statues 'Uttararama' (Northern Monastery). The standing figure's unusual hand gesture has puzzled scholars for centuries β some believe it depicts the Buddha's disciple Ananda weeping at the Buddha's death, others that it shows the Buddha himself in a rare teaching posture. Local Buddhist tradition holds that praying at the reclining figure grants liberation from illness.
