Galway's Land Bird Sanctuary
About This Place
Galway's Land Bird Sanctuary
A small but exceptionally rich urban bird sanctuary on the edge of Nuwara Eliya town, managed as a protected area within the 116-acre Galway's Land National Park. Despite its small size, the sanctuary harbours over 70 bird species including several Sri Lankan endemics such as the Sri Lanka white-eye, dull-blue flycatcher, and Indian blackbird. The forest trail winds through a misty montane forest with tree ferns, rhododendrons, and orchids.

π Legends & Stories
The land was originally part of a British colonial planter's estate and was donated to wildlife conservation in the early 20th century. Birders who have visited say the dawn chorus in the misty forest is 'one of the most extraordinary natural sounds in Asia'. Local people believe certain rare birds seen here are messengers from the mountain spirits of the central highlands.
