Gonagolla Monastery

One of the oldest monasteries in Digamadulla, dating back to the 3rd century BC. The site includes a cave shrine with rare Polonnaruwa-era murals (10th century AD), depicting a Naga princess venerating Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The cave has plastered ceilings, rock pillars, and remains of a stupa, all surrounded by ruins on a rock plateau. The monastery was likely used for Ariyawansa Sutta chanting during the rainy retreat. Despite treasure hunting damage, many original structures still survive.
