Jaffna Fort
A massive star-shaped Dutch fort built in 1658, considered one of the largest and best-preserved colonial fortifications in Asia. The fort overlooks the Jaffna Lagoon and was built on the ruins of a Portuguese fort (1618). Includes the Dutch Church of St. James, ancient Dutch gravestones, barracks, an underground tunnel, and a lighthouse. Heavily damaged during the Sri Lankan civil war but undergoing ongoing restoration.

π Legends & Stories
The Portuguese first built a fortification here in 1618 to control the lucrative Jaffna kingdom. The Dutch expelled the Portuguese and expanded the fort massively. During the British colonial period, the fort served as an administrative centre. In the 1980sβ90s civil war, the fort was the scene of fierce battles between the Sri Lankan Army and LTTE. Local stories tell of Portuguese treasure buried beneath the fort walls.
