π Legends & Stories
Kalpitiya (meaning 'end of the cape' in Sinhala) was historically a Portuguese and Dutch outpost due to its strategic location. Dutch Fort Kalpitiya was built in 1667 and remains partly intact. Local fishing families tell stories of seeing 'sea demons' β actually large manta rays and whale sharks β that their ancestors believed protected the lagoon.
