Kalpitiya Beach and Dolphin Watching

A remote peninsula on Sri Lanka's northwest coast, emerging as the island's premier destination for kite surfing, whale and dolphin watching, and visiting the Wilpattu National Park nearby. The shallow Puttalam Lagoon separates the peninsula from the mainland, creating ideal conditions for kite surfing (December–March). Bar Reef β€” Sri Lanka's largest coral reef β€” lies just offshore and offers world-class diving and snorkelling. Spinner dolphins gather in pods of up to 1,000 near the peninsula.

πŸ“– Legends & Stories

Kalpitiya (meaning 'end of the cape' in Sinhala) was historically a Portuguese and Dutch outpost due to its strategic location. Dutch Fort Kalpitiya was built in 1667 and remains partly intact. Local fishing families tell stories of seeing 'sea demons' β€” actually large manta rays and whale sharks β€” that their ancestors believed protected the lagoon.
