About This Place
Kudagala Forest Reserve & Monastery
Also known as Kuda-Sigiriya, this 300-meter tall mountain near Dehiattakandiya has been a Buddhist monastery for over 2000 years. The site features drip-ledged caves, inscriptions, and rare natural pigment murals inside shrine rooms. Murals once depicted a Bodhisattva and floral motifs, though now partially destroyed. A ruined stupa crowns the summit, and the cave overlooks the Mahaweli River and Hunnasgiriya range. Itβs an important archaeological and spiritual site that blends art, history, and natural beauty.
