The waterfall gets its melancholic name from a tragic colonial-era legend: a young British planter's daughter fell in love with a Tamil tea-plucker, and when their families forbade the relationship, the couple leapt from the top of the falls together. Whether true or invented, the story has been retold for generations and has given the falls a romantic, bittersweet reputation.
