Historic temple in Lahugala, set in an elephant-inhabited forest reserve. Built to celebrate the union of King Kelanitissaβs daughter and King Kavantissa, unifying southern Sri Lanka in 2nd century BC. The 200-acre archaeological site includes temple complexes, granaries, and fortress-like features, once home to 12,000 arahants and designed for wartime preparation.
