A crescent-shaped beach on Sri Lanka's southern coast, famous for its golden sands, turquoise waters, and world-class whale watching. One of the best places on earth to spot blue whales and sperm whales between November and April. The beach offers excellent surfing, snorkelling, and a vibrant beachside dining and nightlife scene. Parrot Rock, a small island just offshore, is a popular swimming spot accessible at low tide.

Easily accessible by road and bus from Galle or Matara; whale-watching boats depart from the harbour at 6β7 AM; calm beach for swimming outside monsoon.
π Legends & Stories
Fishermen in Mirissa have stories of 'the ocean giants' guiding their boats home in storms. The name Mirissa may derive from 'Mara' (the demon-like figure in Buddhist texts) or simply from the shape of the bay. The area was severely affected by the 2004 tsunami but has since been rebuilt.
