π Legends & Stories
The British transformed Nuwara Eliya from a highland wilderness into a colonial retreat in the 1820s, naming it 'New Town' before it became Nuwara Eliya. The Seetha Amman Temple marks where, according to the Ramayana, Sita was held captive by the demon king Ravana. Local legends say the mist-covered hills hide the footsteps of ancient kings and that tea-pickers can still hear mountain spirits in the fog.
