π Legends & Stories
The city was the seat of power that defeated the Chola invaders in 1070 CE. King Parakramabahu I proclaimed that not even a drop of rainwater should flow into the sea without serving mankind β he built vast irrigation tanks to fulfil this vow. The city's sudden decline in the 13th century following King Magha's invasion remains one of Sri Lanka's great historical mysteries.
