Ancient monastic complex and archaeological site in the Eastern Province, dating back to 2nd century BC. Built to enshrine the relics of Arhant Mahinda and Arhant Ittiya Theras, key figures in the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Spans forested 1030-ft mountain filled with ruins: stupas, moonstones, inscriptions, cave dwellings, unique water bowls, unfinished Buddha statue, and elaborate ancient sanitation structures.
