Sacred City of Anuradhapura

Sri Lanka's first ancient capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Founded in the 4th century BC, it was the political and religious capital for over 1,300 years. Key sites include the Sri Maha Bodhi (the world's oldest documented tree, grown from the Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment), Ruwanwelisaya Stupa, Jetavanaramaya Stupa (once the tallest structure in the ancient world), Abhayagiri Monastery, and Thuparamaya Dagoba.

πŸ“– Legends & Stories

According to the Mahavamsa, Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka at Anuradhapura by Arahat Mahinda, son of Emperor Ashoka, in 247 BC. The Bodhi tree sapling was brought by his sister Sangamitta. The city was abandoned after a devastating invasion in 993 AD and lay hidden in jungle for centuries until British archaeologist H.C.P. Bell began excavations in the late 19th century.
