According to the Mahavamsa, Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka at Anuradhapura by Arahat Mahinda, son of Emperor Ashoka, in 247 BC. The Bodhi tree sapling was brought by his sister Sangamitta. The city was abandoned after a devastating invasion in 993 AD and lay hidden in jungle for centuries until British archaeologist H.C.P. Bell began excavations in the late 19th century.
