About This Place
Shasthrawela
An ancient monastery once known as Pabbatha Bodhigiri Vihara, built by King Kawantissa in the 2nd century BC. It was home to 500 Arhants and featured grand preaching halls, dagobas, and statues. Ruins now remain, including a large stupa (500 ft circumference, 60 ft high) and a 30-foot reclining Buddha statue damaged by treasure hunters. The site is historically significant and nestled amidst overgrown jungle terrain with steep rock staircases and hill paths.
