Sigiriya Rock Fortress

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka's most iconic landmarks. This 5th-century rock fortress rises 200 metres above the surrounding plains. Built by King Kasyapa (477–495 AD), it features the remains of a royal palace on the summit, the famous Mirror Wall with ancient graffiti, stunning frescoes of the 'Maidens of the Clouds', water gardens, and a massive lion's paw gateway. Considered by some as the eighth wonder of the world.

πŸ“– Legends & Stories

King Kasyapa built the fortress after killing his father and seizing the throne. Fearing his half-brother's revenge, he chose the impregnable rock as his palace. After Kasyapa's defeat and death, the site became a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century, when it was abandoned and forgotten until rediscovered by British archaeologists in the 19th century.
