The Nagapooshani Amman Kovil
Located on Nagadeepa Island, approximately 30 km from the Jaffna Peninsula, this Hindu temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati (Nagapooshani) and her consort Shiva. The temple has ancient origins, with references in Tamil epics like Manimekalai and Kundalakesi. The original structure was destroyed by the Portuguese but rebuilt in the 18th century. The complex features four gopurams (gateway towers), the tallest being the RajaRajagopuram at 108 feet with 2000 sculptures. It is an important religious site and cultural landmark, attracting thousands of devotees annually.

Accessible via road to Pungudutivu, then ferry to Nagadeepa Island from Kurikadduvan Jetty. Temple grounds have well-maintained paths and facilities.
π Legends & Stories
According to legend, the temple is one of the 64 Shakti Peethams, sacred sites where parts of Goddess Satiβs body fell after her self-immolation. The anklet is said to have landed here. It is believed that Lord Indra established the temple, later built by a Chola merchant. Adi Shankaracharya recognized the templeβs significance in the 9th century. The temple is associated with a 16-day festival, Mahostavam (Thiruvizha), celebrated each June/July.
