Veheragala Temple
About This Place
Veheragala Temple
Located near the Mahaoya hot springs, Veheragala is an ancient monastery dating back to the 2nd century BC, spread across 10 acres. Once a vibrant meditative retreat, it includes drip-ledged caves, stupas, a moonstone, balustrades, and a Buddha footprint replica. Though damaged by treasure hunters and a hurricane, the site holds great historical and spiritual value. The nearby new temple commemorates Ven. Gangodawila Soma Thera, who meditated here.
