Wilpattu National Park
Sri Lanka's largest national park (1,317 sq km) located in the northwest, known for its unique 'villus' β natural lake basins filled with rainwater. Wilpattu is famous for its high density of Sri Lankan leopards, making it one of the best spots to see them in the wild. Also home to sloth bears, Asian elephants, spotted deer, water buffaloes, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species. The park reopened in 2003 after being closed for 25 years due to the civil war.

π Legends & Stories
Wilpattu is mentioned in the ancient chronicles as the landing site of Prince Vijaya, the legendary founding ancestor of the Sinhalese people, who arrived from India around 543 BC. The forest is said to be guarded by the spirit of Kuveni, the indigenous princess who helped Vijaya but was ultimately abandoned by him.
